Assessment:
During construction of new alignment I-69 between Bloomington and Martinsville, the sod and stone originally specified to provide median scour protection was reconsidered. Calculated water velocities and the slope gradient, along with experiences in other parts of the corridor, led the design team to seek out a more durable and sustainable answer.
Solution:
To meet this challenge, Flexamat Plus® was selected for its high level of functionality and long-term aesthetics for this infrastructure critical, highly visible
project.
Summary:
INDOT tests through three separate areas indicated water velocities of up to 8.11 ft/sec and a maximum shear stress of 8.42 lb/ft2. Flexamat tested in accordance with ASTM D 6460 on a 20% slope has a proven maximum velocity of over 30 ft/sec and permissible shear of over 24 lb/ft2, providing a robust factor of safety for both initial and long-term performance.
