Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs) provide permanent erosion control while also protecting seed and soil before vegetation is established. They are typically made up of two components. First, synthetic or natural media enhances mulching and provides erosion control in the near-term. This media is bounded by synthetic exterior layers which permanently reinforce vegetation.
Completely composed of synthetic materials, High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mats (HPTRMs) are more advanced. Their extremely high tensile strengths and increased longevity provide superior durability and higher permissible shear stresses. It also allows them to be utilized as part of a detailed design for slope stability.
There are other unique solutions for turf reinforcement, such as geocells. While each type of turf reinforcement has applications where it is well-suited, in general, the performance, aesthetics, and habitat enhancements of these solutions provide an attractive alternative to smaller diameter riprap in areas where vegetation is feasible.
